For years, My Hero Academia fans theorized over the identity of the "U.A. Traitor." Who was leaking the students' confidential locations to the League of Villains?

Suspects ranged from the invisible Toru Hagakure to the electric Denki Kaminari. But in Chapter 336 of the manga (and Season 7 of the anime), creator Kohei Horikoshi dropped a bombshell that recontextualized one of the series' most eccentric characters.

The traitor was Yuga Aoyama the flamboyant, French speaking, cheese obsessed student known as the "I Cannot Stop Twinkling" hero.

But why did Aoyama do it? He wasn't a villain sympathizer, nor did he harbor any hatred for hero society. His betrayal was a desperate, terrifying struggle for survival born out of love, fear, and a fundamental flaw in his own biology.

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains heavy plot details and explanations regarding the U.A. Traitor identity from Season 7 of the My Hero Academia anime and the manga's Final War arc.

The Root of the Betrayal: A Quirkless Reality

To understand Aoyama's motivations, you have to understand the society of My Hero Academia. In a world where over 80% of the population is born with a superpower, being "Quirkless" is a devastating social stigma.

Like the series protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, Aoyama was born completely Quirkless . As a young child, he was ostracized by his peers and deeply alienated. He felt like a defect in a world of superhumans. His parents, who loved him dearly, were utterly heartbroken watching their son suffer in isolation. They wanted nothing more than for Yuga to have a normal, happy life where he could pursue his dreams of becoming a hero.

Out of pure desperation, Aoyama's wealthy parents turned to the criminal underworld. They sought out the legendary supervillain All For One, a man whose existence was mostly considered an urban myth, but who possessed the terrifying ability to steal and bestow Quirks.

All For One agreed to give young Aoyama a Quirk. He bestowed him with the "Navel Laser"—the ability to shoot a powerful beam of light from his stomach. To the Aoyama family, it felt like a miracle. Yuga finally had a Quirk and could attend U.A. High School.

However, they quickly realized that a deal with All For One is never a charity case. It is a lifetime contract written in blood.

A Hostage to Fear: How All For One Controlled Him

The moment All For One gave Aoyama the Navel Laser, he owned the Aoyama family. He used the Quirk as permanent leverage, threatening to brutally murder Yuga and his parents if they did not comply with his exact demands.

Aoyama was placed into U.A. High School not just to learn, but to serve as a sleeper agent. Every time the League of Villains ambushed Class 1-A, it was because Aoyama was forced to leak their schedules:

  • The U.S.J. Incident: Aoyama informed All For One about the rescue training schedule, allowing Tomura Shigaraki to orchestrate the first major attack on All Might.
  • The Forest Training Camp: Aoyama leaked the highly classified location of the summer camp, resulting in the Vanguard Action Squad's ambush and Katsuki Bakugo's kidnapping.

Every day he spent laughing and training with his classmates, Aoyama was carrying the agonizing guilt of knowing he was selling them out. He lived in constant, suffocating fear that All For One would execute his parents if he slipped up.

The Physical Toll: An Incompatible Body

One of the most brilliant aspects of the traitor reveal is how Horikoshi planted clues from the very beginning. Aoyama always complained of severe stomach aches when he used his Navel Laser for more than a few seconds. He even wore a specialized support belt just to keep the Quirk from leaking out and destroying his body.

The reason for this physical pain is directly tied to his Quirkless origins. Because he was not born with the Navel Laser, his body never naturally adapted to handle it. His genetics were incompatible with his power. This is the exact same struggle Midoriya faced when receiving One For All, creating a profound, unspoken parallel between the two characters.

When Aoyama famously stalked Midoriya and left him a message written in cheese saying, "I know," fans originally thought it was a creepy joke. In reality, Aoyama recognized that Midoriya also had a Quirk that was destroying his body . It was a desperate, coded cry for help from a boy who felt entirely alone, unable to speak the truth aloud.

Redemption: From Traitor to True Hero

When Midoriya and Class 1-A finally uncover the truth, the confrontation is heartbreaking. Aoyama and his parents sob, fully expecting to be arrested or killed. Aoyama brands himself a "despicable villain."

But Midoriya refuses to let him fall. Midoriya understands better than anyone the pain of being Quirkless and the terrifying gravity of All For One's influence. He grabs Aoyama's hand and famously tells him, "You can still become a hero!"

Rather than turning Aoyama over to the authorities immediately, Class 1-A and the pro heroes use him as a double agent. Aoyama courageously faces his abuser, lying to All For One's face to lure the villain into a massive trap , kicking off the Final War arc. By risking his life to protect his friends, Aoyama sheds the title of traitor and finally proves he has the heart of a true hero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aoyama didn't explicitly know the secret of 'One For All,' but he recognized the physical symptoms. He saw that Midoriya's body was breaking itself apart to use his Quirk, which perfectly mirrored Aoyama's own struggles with his Navel Laser. This shared trauma is why Aoyama felt a strange, unspoken kinship with Midoriya.

Under normal circumstances, giving information to terrorists would result in immediate expulsion and prison time. However, because Aoyama was a minor acting under extreme duress and the immediate threat of death, the heroes took a tactical approach. Eraser Head (Shota Aizawa) and the school administration decided that utilizing Aoyama to trick All For One was far more valuable than punishing a traumatized teenager.

In Season 4, Aoyama bizarrely leaves a message made of cheese outside Midoriya's balcony reading 'I know.' While initially played for laughs, it was Aoyama's veiled way of saying, 'I know your body is incompatible with your Quirk, just like mine.' It was an obscure attempt to connect with someone who shared his secret pain without alerting All For One's surveillance.

Without venturing into massive finale spoilers, the status of Quirks bestowed by All For One becomes highly volatile during the Final War. Because Aoyama's power was never naturally his, his connection to the Navel Laser and the physical toll it takes on his body remains a central point of tension in his final stand alongside his classmates.
